Evaluation double page spread

This magazine double spread page is different from the other two this is because, this one isn't that busy it doesnt have alot going on with the colours and images bursting out of the pages. The main colour they have used is white for the background, and black for the writing and the black box around one part of the text. Yet again they have put a black box round this certain part of the text to either show a quote or a title showing what the next paragraph is going to say.
The title on this page isn't the most standing out thing on the page, because its faided abit and there not bright colours like reds, blues, greens etc.. the colour of 'Will he' goes with the main singers clothes and the 'Wont He' goes with the other singers clothes. This is so you are aware who the main singer is, and he stands out the most out of the whole page this shows that most of the text is going to be about him. Hense 'Will He Wont He?' is about him as it links with his name. There is also arrows pointing to the text from the singers, which is also the same colour as the lead singer and the title, they are sticking to the same colours throughout the page.
Image;
The images on this page are also very different to the other double spread pages i have anaylzed because normally the image is in your face, something about it makes it stand out. As for this image the singers are all faded into the background abit apart from the one. They ae all dressed smart and not very modern, their outfits are quite old fashioned with the type of suits the men have on, although they are wearing modern shoes, so this has two different effects on if they are trying to be modern or not.
Design;
The way the magazine is set out is a good idea, having most of the two pages being a image of the singers, and having a small amount of information on the left side under the title explain abit about them, and then on the left hand side a whole colum about them and what the article is about. This grabs the reader because its not a whole page of writing and its not hard to read due to, too much colour and having different text information all over the page in different places. Also the title 'Will He Wont He?" is asking rhetorical question to the reader and which makes you wanna read what the title is asking us.

Evaluation double page spread- NME

This is the another double page spread i am looking at from the magazine NME. There is alot going on, on this page, it is also busy with lots going on but not so busy that it turns the reader away. As you can tell by the two pages there are alot of blacks, reds and whites involved. The background has been made black to make the main titles stand out and you could not miss them, for example the quotes are in red and white, its loud and it capitals its almost as if its shouting at you saying they are the best! and that you must read on.

Images;
There alot of mages on this double page spread, they have been edited to be in a black and white tint to go with the whole effect of the back ground and so the red writing stands out more than the colour of the images. The lead singer is shown on the left hand side, this is the biggest image so the reader is aware he is the main singer. He is dressed casual and rock, with the scruffy looking jacket and dark black hair so you can tell that this band is a rock band. There are also 4 smaller images below him that are memebers of the band, you can tell there not as important as the lead singer as its smaller. These images are also in black and white tint, most of them are dark haired, so it still shows there all part of a rock band.

Layout/design
The way this the magazine is set out, one side has all the information and the other has just mainly pictures, and a small amount of writing. This is all to grabs the readers attention, for example the short sentances instead of long dragging out titles. Otherwise the reader would be put off before starting on the actual information the magazine is about. There is also a small colum of information on the very right hand side, this is not to do with the main article you can tell this because the background is white and doesnt follow the colour scheme. Although it has a red block round the top writing this is to get the reader to read what the extra information is about.

Evaluation of double page spread

This is the first double page spread im going to look at, as you can tell half is a picture and the other has alot of information about these people.
From the title on the right hand side 'The Teenagers' this is a simple font which is bold, but the blue box background around this makes it stand out even more than it would if it was just a plain black style of writing. On the double page spread they have used blue boxes arund certain peaces of information this is to show the important pieces of text, and titles for example breaking up the text in the middle.
They have used a very simple clear font so ypu are able to read without difficulty, also it is busy with information but not so busy that it is hard to read and follow on what the article is about. On the right hand side there is also a block of information in black. This is showing that there is a different story which is not linked to the 'The Teenagers' one, they have used different colours fo the different stories, otherwise the reader would keep on thinking they are linked together.
Images;
There are alot of images on this double page spread, but as you can tell the main important one is on the left hand side of the 3 boys who are obviously 'The Teenagers' and who this article is about. The three boys look very relaxed, layed back, not a care in the world as to whats going on around them and are dressed stylish this is showing a typical teenager and what they are like. Although as we can see on the oposite side where there article is there is a small picture of one of the boys singing in the band, we even have writing above the picture saying "young, dumb.. and fool of filthy tunes" we get a representation aleady of what sort of band they are, buy the image and looks, and the description of them.
The other images like the ones that are not linked to the main article are of more famous people and 'everybodies talking about them'. Yet again all dressed stylish and with someone, there are no pictures of them on there own. There all well known people and have a little description next to them, this is to grab the readers attention on the latest news about them.
The design of the double page spread overall i very eye catching and draws the reader in to finding out lots of different information and about this new band 'The Teenagers'. Images have been used well to make the effect of the page look better.

Kerrang cover

The style of this magazine is loud and has a lot going on. There is a lot of colour and a lot of pictures instead of just one main picture of the lead singer in 'Green Day' Billie Joe. You can tell that the title behind Billy Joe's head says Kerrang and it still grabs the readers attention, the exclamation mark grabs attention.

The colours that are mostly used are, pink, yellow and white on every addition the colours do change round this makes it more exciting to read every addition and it wont be the same. The Yellow title 'Icon' stands out as it is using a simple bold yellow font. This magazine conforms the rock type as The main singer has dark black hair, wearing dark clothes and you can tell he is wearing eye make up as he has dark eyes. Quotes like 'Life is loud' above the title, by this you can tell that this is aimed at people who like rock.

This magazine also shows other famous people like 'Marilyn mans' and what it is going to include about them. Around the pictures there is random words in speech bubbles like 'live chaos' and 'rock stars who changed your world!'  this magazine uses powerful words to get the readers attention. The language on the front cover is normal everyday language that is gramatically correct. There is a lot of writing on there but its all short words or sentences, not paragraphs of information this is so the reader will want to read what the magazine includes without having to read a huge paragraph of information.

The way the magazine has been designed is good, because of the way its all set for example the main story on who the addition is about, is in the middle so the reader is aware. Then all the other stories on famous people are on the side of the magazine. The style of this magazine is very crowded and shows that the magazine is full of information. The way Billie joe is posing he looks relaxed and tired which is contrast with how the magazine is loud and bursting out of the frame.

Q cover

The style of the magazine Q is dark, most of the colours are red and black. The Q is old fashioned looking showing that the magazine has been out for a long time. It is also the same on every addition. The red box around the title Q is the same on every addition and this grabs the readers attention. The title 'rocks' also red which keeps to the red colour scheme and stands out.

Cheryl Cole, close up is in the centre of the front cover this is not ow you would normally see her, with make up run and wet hair, you would normally see her all glamorous with her hair perfect if she was modelling for a magazine or advert. This represents she is dangerous. She is also dressed in dark clothes but the red lipstick is standing out along with the main bold writing on the cover.

At the top of the magazine in small writing 'UKs best selling music magazine' is showing that it is popular to the readers they put this on here because it grabs the readers attention and make the magazine seem at its best.

3 words in small in red is used above Cheryl's name and this is the name of her song. This is showing there will be a section about her and her songs in the magazine. They have tried to make Cheryl look more rock than useral for example the the title 'rock' reflex that she is trying to be rock with the darkness of her outfit and makeup.

On the side of the magazine it shows you what it includes, this is all in colour so you don't miss it, and also in capital letters to stand out but not so much it takes your eyes off of the main story in the magazine, which is Cheryl Cole. On the right hand side the writing is in a big font which goes into a smaller font to create an effect and is eye catching. The most important things are in big like '2010 reviewed' and then the smaller writing is the less important things/stories. The name 'Cheryl Cole' isn't so standing out as the other writing this is because we know who she is and the readers who would buy this magazine are into her type of music.

Preliminary Contents Page

This is my contents page for my school magazine which I also created on photoshop. I also feel like this isn't a very successful contents page, like the front cover it is very boring and bland and has nothing to it. To start off with, the main headline 'Contents' is boring i used a very simple font and this does not draw the reader into reading the magazine. There are no effects what so ever on this page, and looks again like a poster. I only have one picture and its not even clear because I took it of an already existing photo round the school of the head boy and the light in the background reflected onto the image leaving white circles on the image. I never got the time to get more than one image for my contents page as it was hard to get them for my page headlines. I Also thought the contents page is too white it needs more colour, to improve this i could have made the whole background blue and put better effects on it to make the background have a tint of white in it, then made the headline black and bold and use a drop shadow to make it stand out. But I didn't know how to use photoshop properly when making th preliminary product, therefore I did not progress on this. I also dislike the way my content page has been set out with the numbers and headlines all boring and in one colum, it doesn't have anything to it, even if i used a more interesting font it could have made the contents page look better overall. Yet again this does not grab the readers attention it is way too boring I could have improved this contents page in many ways even if just adding alot more photos on the right hand side can completely turn the magazine around. However yet again not everything is bad on the contents page for example I do like the fact that i have the page number reference in blue this makes it easier to find the number your looking for and it always goes with the colour scheme which is blue as I have a blue band at the top of my contents page, also the way its set out is like a school magazine so its not serposed to be the most eyecatching magazine that will be on shelves and needs to be bought. I also like the blue band the word 'Contents' is writen on, if I made the font better and used better effects on it then I think thats all the title would need to draw the reader in, as it also goes well with my front cover showing it is from the same magazine as the title has a blue box around it.
If i was to make this better i would change the layout of it have more exciting effects and eyecatching images, also have a blue background to make the whole effect of the magazine not to seem to plain. Even changing small features like having better fonts that are not so simple as the one i used here could change the whole view of the product.

Preliminary Front Cover

As a starter to get used to using photoshop, we had to create a school magazine for our own school. Ive realised that this isn't a very good cover for a number of reasons like layout, images and so on. Firstly I find the magazine very boring and doesn'treally have anything to it. The images looked like they have just been placed anywhere like the on of mr Garrick in the right hand corner, if you look closely the bit of the background under his arm hadn't been rubbed out so it is still showing a section of the background. The main image looks as if it has just been put anywhere, it does't have anything to it like effects, blending, drop background, nothing. You also cannot tell by the main image who the actual exchange student is, nothing on the magazine is telling which one of the girls the main headline is talking about. There are also no big standing out headlines on my magazine front cover, nothing to draw the reader into reading it. Also the Goffs logo is in the wrong place there wasn't enough room next to the title to put it in the right hand corner so I had to put it below the title which doesn't look right and doesn't flow well. Another problem I found was the the headlines under my images are not eye catching, although they have blue boxes around the text, it doesn't look interesting to read it has no effects on it and the style of this magazine is too like a poster format as i also do not have a barcode to even show it is a magazine you can buy. So all of this doesn't give the reader a good impression when they first see the magazine cover. However, not everything on my product is bad for example the actual images are clear and if i made the main image go across most of the page and put the other two smaller images in a box it would have looked a lot better, just because they're quite small it doesn't give the same effect. Also the Respect, Confidence and Achievement is very simple however I like it because its straight to the point and goes well on a school magazine.
